HOW TO
MAKE A
REFERRAL
Who can refer
-
A student may refer themselves.
-
A teacher/staff may refer a student.
-
A parent/guardian may refer his/her child.
-
An administrator may refer a student.
Reasons for a referral.
-
Concerns with their attitude toward school.
-
Concerns with their relationships with peers at school.
-
Concerns about their personal/emotional development.
-
Concerns about situations or life events that may be happening at outside of school and affecting their behavior/school work.

When should it be done:
-
When students are over emotional and cannot calm down in an appropriate and brief amount of time.
-
When a student requires more support and attention to address or solve a problem or situation.
-
When students need more one on one help to come up with solutions and strategies for an issue.
-
When a student needs more privacy than a teacher can provide in the classroom.
How should it be done:
-
Students can fill out a form online or in person and I will meet with them at my very next availability.
-
If a student needs to be seen immediately and the student unexpectedly requires counselor support, please call my office and let me know what has happened or send me an email explaining the situation.
-
I may also come to the students' classroom to retrieve the student.

**Please know that after 4-5 individual counseling sessions, a student may need to be referred out to community mental health services for long-term therapy. As a school counselor, we are only allowed to provide short-term goal based counseling.**
